Inspired by the ancient Chinese five-element theory of Wu-Xing, this project is themed around fire and water. Ji Liu previously explored these elements in his well-received 2018 album Fire & Water. Revisiting, dwelling, and expanding on this musical idea for the sheet music project has shone a new light on these elements amidst the current world condition, where peace and unity are in dire need.

There are three parts in this publication:

1. Transcriptions. Ji Liu recorded a selection of his arrangements that have not yet been published.

2. Performance commentary. As a tribute to the traditional practice of providing interpretative editions, Ji Liu shares his performance directions, perspective and technical solutions to the works of Saint-Saëns and Debussy.

3. Composition. An original piece Fire & Water dedicated to this project that draws in Ji Liu’s reflection and enlightenment from revisiting the fire and water theme.

When Ji Liu proposed the idea of revisiting the theme behind his well-received 2018 album, we were very excited. This project allowed us to not only work with a talented musician but also allowed us to reach a new audience for our business. We have now secured permission to create the sheet music book with the album’s original artwork. However, it is important to us that the Fire & Water sheet music book is more than just a compliment to the album. We have worked hard to plan a book that stands on its artist merit and will no doubt be well-loved by all who own it. This project foreshadows Ji’s future publications and musical projects.

The Fire & Water sheet music book will include Ji Liu’s Solo Piano Arrangements of:

  • Saint-Saëns -The Carnival of the Animals Aquarium
  • Rachmaninov – Romances Op. 14 No. 11 Spring Waters
  • De Falla – El Amor Brujo
  • Saint-Saëns – The Swan (The Carnival of the Animals) Arr. Alexander Siloti and Ji Liu

Ji Liu’s annotations (including performance directions and fingerings) for

  • Debussy – Reflets dans I’Eau
  • Debussy – La Cathédrale Engloutie (from Preludes Book 1)

A new composition for Solo Piano.
